SEE-LA: Science and Engineering of the Environment of Los Angeles
UCLA and NSF GK-12 Program
Program Website
Program Description (taken partially from the program website):
The UCLA Science and Engineering of the Environment of Los Angeles (SEE-LA) GK-12 program is supported by the
National Science Foundation Graduate Teaching Fellows in K-12 Education (NSF GK-12). The NSF GK-12 is designed
to partner K-12 teachers and scientists in an effort to improve science education. Unfortunately, the NSF GK-12
program is no longer being funded by the NSF.
The SEE-LA GK-12 program partners UCLA faculty, UCLA science and engineering graduate students (Fellows),
middle and high school science teachers from LA Unified and Culver City Unified School Districts, and their
students into a program of science and engineering exploration that brings the environment of Los Angeles
into the classroom.
I worked with two 8th grade physical science teachers (Sue Robins and Don Guthrie) at Culver City Middle School
during the 2008-09 academic year. My role was to be a "science expert" in the classroom two days per week,
support the master teachers in the classroom, create lessons based on my research, and to assess learning
by students in the class.
